West Africa's banking sector has experienced a remarkable transformation over the past decade, spurred by digitalization, regulatory reforms and shifting customer demands. This evolution is fueling the growth of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the linchpin of West African economies and the broader industrial sector. Digitalization is spearheading this transformation. High mobile penetration rates in the region, coupled with the proliferation of fintech startups, have facilitated the widespread adoption of mobile and online banking. This shift has brought about a more inclusive financial system, allowing banks to tailor financial products and services to the needs of SMEs and industrial firms. West African regulatory bodies have been proactive in creating an environment conducive to SME and industrial growth. The Central Bank of Nigeria, for example, established the $550 million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Fund to enhance SMEs' access to finance.

Although significant strides have been made, the potential for further growth is vast. The World Bank estimates that there is a $331 billion credit gap for SMEs in Sub-Saharan Africa, underlining a significant opportunity for banks.
